Essex Police Department Announces Evacuation of Approximately Six Homes of Wood Street after Unspecified Ordnance is Found in Home Undergoing Cleanup After Sale

ESSEX — Police Chief Paul Francis reports that the Essex Police and Fire Departments have ordered an evacuation of approximately six homes at the southern end of Wood Drive after a cleaning crew working on a recently sold home discovered an unknown piece of ordnance inside the house.

Essex Police and Fire responded at 10:33 a.m. after the cleaning crew reported that they found a suspicious item. The house has recently sold and was undergoing cleanout operations.

The State Police Bomb Squad responded quickly and based on the initial findings, Essex Police and Fire ordered an evacuation of the surrounding area. Approximately six homes have been evacuated and portions of Chebacco Lake have been cordoned off during the investigation.

The evacuations are being made out of an abundance of caution.
